European Blackjack

european blackjackEuropean Blackjack is very popular, not just in Europe but world wide. Since each casino set their own rules for European Blackjack, it is very important to check the rules for the specific table you wish to play at. Two tables both marketed as European Blackjack can have different rules, so be careful. Even a small rule change can require a strategy adjustment if you want to be a long-term winning player at blackjack. This is true offline as well as online.

The rules below are used by many casinos that offer European Blackjack, but definitely not by all. Read more about BlackJack and other casino games in Europe at There you also find good strategies and bonuses.

Rules for European Blackjack

  • European Blackjack is often played with just two decks, shuffled together. The standard 52 card deck is used, without any jokers or other wild cards.
  • The dealer deals herself one card, face-up, at the start of the round. Since she doesn’t deal herself a second card at the start of the round, there is no peeking. She will not deal herself a second card until the end of the round, when all the players have already acted.
  • You are only allowed to double down on a two-card hand worth 9 points, 10 points or 11 points. To double down, you must make a new wager that is identical in size to your original wager. You will then receive exactly one new card on the hand you doubled down on. You are not allowed to refuse this card, and you are not allowed to ask for a fourth card.
  • Two cards of identical value can be split. You are not allowed to continue splitting after the initial split of a hand.
  • Aces split just like any other cards, but you can receive several cards on a split ace, if you want to.
  • If you split aces and a ten point card lands on an ace, that hand is not a blackjack. It is worth the same as any other 21 point hand.
  • The dealer is not allowed to make any decisions regarding her hand. She must hit on 16 and below, and she must stand on 17 and above, even if it is a soft 17.

Sometimes the basic European Blackjack is spiced up by various special payments for special hands. At such tables, there might for instance be a special bonus payment for hands consisting of 7 – 7 – 7 or a Ace of Spades + Jack of Spades.
