Spanish Blackjack

spanish blackjackSpanish Blackjack is popular world wide, not just in Spain and Latin America. It is up to each individual casino to set its own rules for Spanish Blackjack, so it is important to check out the rules for the specific table you wish to play at. The rules outlines below are used in many casinos, but absolutely not in all casinos that offer Spanish Blackjack.

Rules for Spanish Blackjack

  • Spanish Blackjack is played with eight decks shuffled together. The standard 52 card deck is used, without any jokers or other wild cards.
  • At the start of a round, the dealer will give herself two cards. One card is dealt face-up, the other face-down. The face-down card is known as the the dealer’s hole card. If he face-up card is an ace or a card worth ten points, the dealer will peek at her hole card. If she finds out that she has a blackjack, the round is over.
  • You are allowed to double down on any number of cards, regardless of point value.
  • Doubling down after splitting is allowed.
  • Two cards of identical value can be split. You are allowed to split no more than three times in a row, creating a maximum of four hands from your start hand.
  • There is no special rule for aces; they can be split and re-split just like any other cards.
  • Late surrender is possible when playing Spanish Blackjack.
  • Surrender is allowed even if you have doubled down.
  • The dealer is not allowed to make decisions about her hand. She must hit on 16 or lower, and she must also hit on a soft 17. With a hard 17 or above, she must stay.
  • If both you and the dealer has a blackjack, you win.If both you and the dealer has a hand worth 21 points, you win. This is a nice change from most other blackjack variants, where a tie simply means that you get to keep your wager.
  • Spanish Blackjack is famous for the bonus payouts for special hands. Please note that in most casinos, you can not receive a bonus payout on a hand that has been doubled down.
